Our MVMRUG Spring meeting of 1997 was held in the hometown of the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Amerisuites Hotel is located just off exit 39 on I-275, about 4 miles west of the I-75/I-275 junction. As usual, a block of rooms was reserved for Thursday night and we want to "thank" everyone again who came early and allowed us to take advantage of the hotel discount and joined us at the Thursday night "dutch-treat" dinner which was held at the "Montgomery Inn" where we enjoyed "super" food,(especially the ribs), many laughs and a "balloon and magic" show hosted by Al "The Amazing Alto" Tokarsky. (There were balloon toys, teddy bears and even an "NT alien" which looked like something from a "Star Wars" movie.) What a GREAT evening!
Our agenda covered the following subjects: (Some recaps are available now! Other recaps will be available shortly, so stay tuned... and revisit our web pages soon!)
8:00 a.m. Registration
A continental breakfast.
8:30 a.m. MVMRUG Business Meeting
9:00 a.m. Anatomy of a Technical Conversion
David Kreuter - VM Resources LTD.
The Speaker's Abstract
This presentation focuses on the technical highlights of
converting two VM shops from HPO 5 to VM/ESA 1.2.1. Both
system and application technical issues and problems are
included. Tools discussed include REXX, PIPELINEs and
CMS and CP commands useful in debugging. Examples are shown
from production environments.
10:15 a.m. Break
10:30 a.m. VM Web Server Performance
Barton Robinson - Velocity Software, Inc.
Recap
The Speaker's Abstract
This presentation will be the result of the instrumentation of
Beyond Software's Enterprise Web product. Counters have been
put into EWEB to allow analysis of the server and to ensure
greater scaleability in the future by allowing bottleneck
detection and usage patterns to be analyzed in the context
of a full function VM performance analysis product.
The counters added will be presented with the rationale behind
them - and hopefully some useful information on how users would use
them.
11:10 a.m. Instrumenting TCPIP, FOCUS and the OV Calendar
Barton Robinson - Velocity Software. Inc.
Recap
The Speaker's Abstract
VM Application Instrumentation - why aren't all developers doing
it?
If VM is the most scaleable operating system in the world, running
on P390 to most of the largest mainframes available, does that
mean your applications and servers are fully scaleable also? Nope.
Many applications or servers have inherent problems precluding
them from fully taking advantage of available hardware.
TCPIP has been instrumented by Velocity Software to provide
information about what is going on inside TCPIP. FOCUS has been
instrumented by Information Builders to show what is going on inside
FOCUS service machines, and the O/V Calendar feature has been
instrumented by IBM. Specifics of each of these will be discussed.
As performance knowledge is gained from these new tools, this
presentation will be enhanced to show how this new data can be
used for tuning

1:30 p.m. Rexx I/O from the Developer's Point of View
Gary Brodock - C. W. Costello & Associates
Recap
The Speaker's Abstract
In the beginning there was EXEC and EXECIO. Then came REXX,
but we still used EXECIO to read and write CMS files. Along
came Rexx I/O function support in CMS's REXX, and we were able
to use portable Rexx language facilities to read and write
CMS files. Here from the lead developer of CMS's Rexx I/O
support is a discussion of Rexx I/O and its implementation
from a developer's point of view.
2:30 p.m. Break
2:45 p.m. Coding a PIPELINE User Written Stage in Assembler
Dave Kreuter - VM Resources LTD.
The Speaker's Abstract
This presentation shows step by step coding and methods for
creating a Pipeline user written stage in assembler language
using the new pipeline assembler MACROs introduced in CMS12.
User written stages are a powerful way of extending the
capabilities of PIPELINEs.
3:45 p.m. VM/ESA and the Year 2000
John Franciscovich - IBM
The Speaker's Abstract
Have you started thinking about how you'll need to change your
VM/ESA applications so they will continue to support your
business in the Year 2000 and beyond?
In December 1996, Version 2 Release 2 of VM/ESA delivered the
first phase of VM/ESA support for operation with dates in the
Year 2000 and beyond. This session describes the new support
that was introduced, as well as previously existing VM/ESA functions
that can help with your Year 2000 transition. Future enhancements
to this support, which are under consideration, will also be
discussed.
4:45 p.m. Door Prizes/Closing/Q & A/Socializing
