8:00 a.m. Registration
A continental breakfast will be provided.
8:30 a.m. MVMRUG Business Meeting
8:45 a.m. Fun With CP Tracing
Phil Smith III, Sterling Software
Abstract
If you've done any debugging on VM, you've probably
at least heard of CP PER and TRACE, and maybe also
TRSOURCE, TRSAVE, and SET CPTRACE. Perhaps vendor
support staff have talked you through using TRACE
PROG to trap a program check and then issuing a few
DISPLAY commands; perhaps you've gone much further.
If you've never used any of these commands, you
should learn how -- they can simplify your debugging
life! If you have used them, there still may be more
power there than you realize.
Come hear an experienced VM developer and system
programmer describe how he exploits these facilities,
and his "wish list" for future enhancements.
Bring your own hints and suggestions to share with others!
9:45 a.m. Break
10:00 a.m. CMS Application Debugging
Phil Smith III, Sterling Software
Abstract
A CMS program just ABENDed. Or looped. Or Just
Plain Didn't Work Right. Now what? If you wrote the
program, you may have some idea how to approach it.
But if you didn't ... or if it's a vendor program,
distributed without source ... what then?
There are still many things you can do which, while
not providing a "magic bullet" to fix bugs, will
still help you or the vendor in diagnosing and fixing
problems.
Come to this session to hear approaches to fixing
black box programs, including diagnostic techniques,
tracing tricks, and ways to describe (mis)behavior in
meaningful terms. Learning these will make your job
easier by reducing time and effort required to solve
problems. While focused on CMS, many of the
techniques are universally applicable to any
environment.
11:00 a.m. Using the RSK to Implement High Performance VM/ESA Servers
Dave Jones, VM Resources Ltd.
Abstract
This session will focus on the techniques and
methodologies used when designing and implementing
very high performance and robust servers running on
VM, using the new Reusable Server Kernel tool kit.
The session will focus on the actual design and
coding methods commonly employed to develop an
RSK-based application, with code samples in both PL/X
and assembler. Examples of RSK techniques will be
drawn from VM Resources' new VM/MailServer product.
12:00 a.m. MVMRUG 13th Anniversary Lunch (provided)
1:00 p.m. FREE - FOR - ALL
Abstract
Bring your VM/CMS questions and problems and let the
assembled gurus try to answer them, or help answer
questions that others have brought to the meeting.
1:30 p.m. High Performance Web CGIs Using PL/I
Dave Jones, VM Resources Ltd.
Abstract
Techniques and tools will be presented that allow
VM/ESA application programmers with no prior Web CGI
programming experience to quickly develop and deploy
very high performance CGI applications written in
PL/I. These techniques and tools allow the CGI
programmer to use not only all of PL/I's powerful
capabilities, but advanced CMS capabilities (nucleus
extensions, VM data spaces) as well. Some, but not
all, of these techniques will be based on VM
Resources' new P/R Developer's ToolKit.
2:30 p.m. Break
2:45 p.m. VM/ESA 2.4.0 Overview
Chuck Morse, IBM Washington System Center
Abstract
On July 23rd, IBM made available the latest release of
VM/ESA, containing new hardware support, improved
guest support and lots of TCP/IP enhancements. Chuck
Morse, of IBM's Washington Systems Center will review
these enhancements along with other recent
improvements to VM/ESA.
4:00 p.m. Door Prizes/Closing/Q & A/Socializing
