9:00 a.m. Y2K Search and Rescue for End-User Computing
(Using VM to identify, track and fix Y2K problems)
Lyndon M. Thomas, The Timken Company
Abstract
VM/CMS provides you with a lot of powerful tools to
quickly develop a set of routines to help manage the Y2K
project for a diverse and largely undocumented set of
applications maintained by end-users. After using CMS
routines to inventory and track our Y2K status for
production MVS and CMS applications, we expanded our
efforts to help end-users identify, track and correct any
Y2K problems that they have in their applications.
For end-user computing, we provided a series of educa-
tional news items explaining the Y2K problem, scan
routines to identify potential Y2K problems, and set up
separate Y2K CMS and PC systems for testing. We asked
users to review their own CMS and PC applications and
either sign off on Y2K compliancy or request assistance
via email. These email responses automatically update
a database and track project status.

10:15 a.m. Automating Defrag of Vm Volumes Using Dirmaint
George Sobierajski, VM Resources, Ltd.
Abstract
Combined with DIRMAINT V1R5.0 on a VM/ESA V2R2.0
environment, VM volumes were reorganized to create
large contiguous gaps from severely fragmented volumes
with total automation using a dedicated Service Virtual
Machine written entirely in REXX and CMS Pipelines.
Preventing the problem on systems where mDISKs move
frequently is solved.
11:00 a.m. Automating SYSGEN to Combine Production and Test Systems
George Sobierajski, VM Resources, Ltd.
Abstract
A control file driven tool to build a new combined
system from a test and production system. The resulting
new system for production is designed and built by one
systems programmer in one day. The control files are re-
usable which provides savings in resources each time they
are used. Test systems are also created using the same
tools. A minor variation of usage has moved all CMS
mDISKs to a different media type in the fraction of the
time compared to other methods.

Abstract
No technology has received more hype than the internet.
In a business setting, the internet/intranet can be
incredibly useful or incredibly wasteful - distinguishing
fact from fiction is critical to successfully introducing
and benefiting from net technology. This session will
cover, from an experienced webmaster's point of view,
policies covering employee internet use, anecdotes and
examples of internet abuse, hoaxes, hackers and urban
legends. Learn the basic vocabulary and 'culture' of the
net, as well as what ethical dilemmas this technology
poses.
