9:15 a.m. Help! My (Virtual) Penguin is Sick!
Phil Smith III
Levanta
Abstract
So you've gotten your Linux on the mainframe up and
running, and perhaps even have some production Linux
guests. But one of them isn't responding, or at least,
someone says it isn't. What do you do now? How do you
approach figuring out what might be wrong with it?
This session is designed for the VM system programmer or
Linux administrator who must diagnose such problems on
z/VM.
It will define and understand ways Linux can get sick,
show techniques to decide what is wrong, and discuss how
to gather debugging information for your supporting
vendor (if any), the application owner, or just because
you think you should gather some information before
recycling the guest!

10:20 a.m. Open Source
Phil Smith III

Abstract
We've all heard how Open Source programs are the answer
to all our computing TCO woes. But, like home cancer
remedies and "Make Money Fa$t!!!" schemes, most folks
find themselves somewhat skeptical of such
too-good-to-be-true claims.
Yet we hear of success stories, and all of us can see
that Open Source code -- particularly Linux -- is in the
news, and garnering the attention of upper management.
So what is the real story? Is Open Source a panacea?
When does it make sense -- always? never? sometimes?
How can you possibly make intelligent, you-bet-your-job
decisions about it?
The speaker will discuss the value of Open Source.
While centered around a formal presentation, the goal is
an interactive exchange of ideas and experiences which
will enable a realistic appraisal of the pros and cons
of using Open Source in the enterprise. Whether you
have experiences to share or are considering sticking a
toe into the Open Source pool, come, share, and learn!

Abstract
Although the concept "Linux on the Mainframe" provides
an excellent business case and is making headway in the
enterprise, it is tempered by different administrative
challenges for the inexperienced or unwary. Some of
these challenges of running Linux on z/VM include
network configuration; integration with existing process
frameworks; managing user accounts across instance;
change management; optimizing DASD usage; and scheduling
issues. In addition to discussing these inherent
challenges in detail, this session's speaker will
present a vendor product to effectively manage and
optimize Linux on z/VM.
12:30 p.m. Lunch
Attendees will be on their own for lunch. There is a
cafe in the building and several restaurants nearby.
