9:15 a.m. VM and Linux - A perfect Match
Dale Smith
NiSource
Abstract
In the same manner as two people support each
other in a good marriage, Dale will show you
how VM and Linux make a perfect match, creating
powerful, efficient computing systems, with
great performance and functionality.

Tools for z/VM
Tracy Dean, VM Development

Dan Martin
Rocket Software, Inc.
Abstract
With the continued growth of z/VM and Linux
on zSeries, the need for system and storage
management tools on z/VM grows as well. Come
hear what IBM announced this year for tape
and tape device management (including inte-
gration with DFSMSrmm on z/OS) and backup and
restore services. You'll also get some insight
into what might be coming soon.

1:15 p.m. Virtual Networking with z/VM Guest LANS
and the z/VM Virtual Switchpdf
Alan Altmark
IBM
Abstract
Did you know that you can create virtual LAN
segments that connect your z/VM guest together
without the need for all those messy point-to-
point connections? And, did you know you can
bridge those LAN segments to your externals LANs
without creating new subnets? In this session
you'll hear the latest on how, and when to use
z/VM Guest LANs and the z/VM Virtual Switch.
We'll also talk about z/VM's support for IEEE
Virtual LANs (VLANs).

Scott Courtney
Sine Nomine Associates
Abstract
Scott presents several variants of a horizontally-
scaled email design that can be deployed using
distributed Linux, mainframe Linux, or a combination
of the two, which provides inbound and outbound
SMTP, virus and spam blocking, POP3 and IMAP4
delivery, webmail, and rapid semi-automated deploy-
ment of the new servers to meet increased demand.
This is a design that Sine Nomine Associates has
successfully deployed at multiple customer sites, and
Scott will provide a detailed case study of one such
deployment at a regional ISP with 40,000 customers
and traffic levels in excess of 25,000 messages
per hour after spam and virus blocking.
