 9:00 a.m. MVMRUG Business Meeting

 9:15 a.m. Building Linux "Appliances" with z/VM
           and Open Source Software
           David Boyes,
           Sine Nomine Associates

           Abstract

The viability of Linux as a base for useful tools
is clear and well established. The problem is
where to start and how one can take the number
of tools to solve particular problems that
we've all lived with for ages, but never had
a good way to solve, using the standard z/VM or
other system tools without either spending a
fortune, or coding until our bosses wonder
           about our sanity

This talk outlines basic requirements and
processes for creating a Linux-based appliance
on VM, takes inventory of the VM-specific tools
that are available in the Linux world and
illustrates a couple of examples of assembling
helpful appliances that actually fix some
longstanding z/VM issues. Bring ideas and
questions -- maybe we'll build a few appliances
           during the meeting...

10:15 a.m. Break

10:30 a.m. Using VM:Operator to Monitor Linux Guests
           Dave Jones,
           Computer Associates

           Abstract

For some sites, moving to Linux on the zSeries
means adding VM to your enterprise. For others,
it just means a new use for an existing plat-
form. Through the use of your existing CA VM
management tools, this session will discuss
how you can leverage your existing VM:Operator
product to assist you in administering and
           managing your Linux environment.

11:30 p.m. Lunch (You can hit the local restaurants or use the
           cafeteria located at NiSource.)

12:30 p.m. FREE - FOR - ALL

1:00 p.m. Linux File-Level Backups without Direct Tape Access
           David Boyes,
           Sine Nomine Associates

           Abstract

Most shops have tape automation and other
           sophisticated library management in place,
but for z/OS or other production systems that
don't share well with other systems, Linux,
true to it's Unix roots, doesn't really under-
stand tape management much in the first place,
and asking it to cope with multiple LPARS,
tape assignment, volume management and all
that jazz, plus the influx of FCP SCSI disk
and tape that z/PS and z/VM can't directly
access or use yet, really makes getting
good file and image level backups of Linux
           systems to to do.

This talk demonstrates a way to augment a
           z/VM or z/OS system with a Linux-based open-
sourced backup tool to combine the best of
BOTH worlds, a flexible network-based backup
system capable of file and image-level backup
and restore of a wide range of desktop and
           Unix/Linux-derived systems to tapes controlled
and managed by your real enterprise tape
system on z/PS or z/VM. The talk describes
setting up the open-source Amanda and Bacula
tools to handle the open-systems data collection
and consolidation, configuring data to be
stored to virtual tape residing on VM or z/OS,
and using DFSMShsm or DFSMS/VM to actually move
the data to tape. The end product is a power-
ful, flexible backup system for Linux guests
and other systems connected to your network
at a very attractive price tag -- the time
           to set up the tools.

 2:00 p.m. Break

2:15 p.m. Linux for zSeries - Strategy and Tactics
           Ed Gauthier,
           IBM

           Abstract

The presentation gives an overview of the
strategy that zSeries has adopted for Linux.
Strategy, as we know is a vision, and a vision
without action is little more than a daydream.
This presentation outlines the vision for
Linux on zSeries servers, and then illustrates
the tactics we are employing for making that
vision real. To take it one step further, we
show how IBM uses Linux on zSeries servers to
support our own business to prove that we
believe in Linux on zSeries as much as our
           customers do.

 3:15 p.m. Door Prizes/Closing/Q & A/Socializing
