A continental breakfast will be provided.

 9:00 a.m. MVMRUG Business Meeting

 9:30 a.m. Open Source Software
           Phil Smith, III,
           Linuxcare

           Abstract

We've all heard how Open Source programs are the
answer to all our computing TCO woes. But, like
home cancer remedies and "Make Money Fa$t!!!"
schemes, most folks find themselves somewhat
           skeptical of such too-good-to-be-true claims.

We hear of success stories, and all of us can see
that Open Source code -- particularly Linux -- is
in the news, and garnering the attention of upper
           management.

So what is the real story? Is Open Source a
panacea? When does it make sense -- always?
never? sometimes? How can you possibly make
           intelligent, you-bet-your-job decisions about it?

The speaker will discuss the value of Open Source.
While centered around a formal presentation, the
goal is an interactive exchange of ideas and
experiences which will enable a realistic appraisal
of the pros and cons of using Open Source in the
enterprise. Whether you have experiences to share
or are considering sticking a toe into the Open
Source pool, come, share, and learn!

10:30 a.m. Break

10:45 a.m. Simplifying LINUX on z/VM
           Phil Smith, III,
           Linuxcare

           Abstract

Although the concept "Linux on the Mainframe"
provides an excellent business case and is
making headway in the enterprise, it is
           tempered by different administrative challenges
for the inexperienced or unwary. Some of these
challenges of running Linux on z/VM include
           network configuration; integration with existing
process frameworks; managing user accounts across
           instance; change management; optimizing DASD
usage; and scheduling issues. In addition to
discussing these inherent challenges in detail,
this session's speakers will present some
potential solutions to effectively manage and
           optimize Linux on z/VM.

11:45 a.m. Lunch (You can hit the local restaurants or use the
           cafeteria located at Ross Labs)

 1:15 p.m. Writing Pipeline Stages
           Will Roden, IBM VM

           Abstract
This discussion will start with how to write stages using
REXX. Then the concepts of CALLPIPE will be introduced and
I will show how it interacts with REXX stages. Next we
will discuss ADDPIPE and how it is different than CALLPIPE
and why you would want to use it. With this u nderstanding
of REXX stages, we will describe writing stages in
ASSEMBLER. Now that the background is in place, we will
discuss what the PRODUCER argument on VAR, VARLOAD, STEM,
           and REXXVARS will accomplish.

 2:15 p.m. Break

 2:30 p.m. Specs 407
           Will Roden, IBM VM

           Abstract
Specs 407 was a significant enhancement to Pipelines. This
provides a method to do calculations with pipeline data.
First we will re view the original SPECS stage. Then we
will discuss how SPECS 407 handles recor ds and how it
reads from two stations. I will show how to do arithmetic
with da ta within a record and how to accumulate data
between records including sub tot als and picture
formatting. Finally, we'll discuss how to use its IF
constructs . This discussion will eliminate the mystery of
           Pipeline's largest stage.

 3:30 p.m. Door Prizes/Closing/Q & A/Socializing
