The Beginnings of the Dream Machine
Scott Courtney, Sine Nomine Associates
Abstract
Briefly surveys the history of the System/390 Linux
port and IBM's involvement with Linux, from a skunk-
works project to an IBM strategic platform. For
mainframe folks, it answers the question, "Why Linux?"
For Linux folks, it answers the question, "Why a
mainframe?". Looking ahead, it examines how these
two disparate cultures can come together to learn
from one another and to build something totally new.

10:15 a.m. VM TCP/IP Routing - Part 1
Alan Altmark, IBM-VM
Alan Altmark's Home Page
Abstract
This presentation provides detailed information on
TCP/IP routing and how to configure and use TCP/IP's
static and dynamic routing functions. The mysteries
of coding the Gateway and BsdRoutingParms statements
for VM TCP/IP are revealed. While the syntax may be
VM, the concepts apply to all operating systems,
including VSE and Linux.

3:15 p.m. Building a Linux Firewall with IPTABLES
Scott Courtney, Sine Nomine Associates
Abstract
Starting with kernel 2.4, Linux has deprecated the
IPCHAINS packet filtering in favor of a more versatile
tool called IPTABLES. IPTABLES allows an inexpensive Linux
computer to take the place of a much more expensive
commercial firewall for many small- to medium-sized
organizations. This session introduces the IPTABLES packet
filter and provides practical examples of how to configure
IPTABLES for basic packet filtering as well as transparent
IP address masquerading. Brief discussion of migration issues
from IPCHAINS to IPTABLES, if time permits.
