session describes the value that VM brings to the
Linux user and explains how it can enhance the

Abstract
Intended for those who are new to the Linux and
UNIX command shell, this session will teach the
basics of common text utilities such as 'cut',
'tr', 'sed', 'grep' and 'awk'. Examples of how
to use these commands in simple shell scripts
will be discussed, with emphasis on combining
them in multistage command pipes.
Prereq: Elementary knowledge of 'bash' or 'sh'
environment, including how to navigate
the directory tree.

To those who are used to seeing disk volumes
assigned a letter designator, as in VM or DOS, the
tree-oriented file hierarchy in Linux can be
confusing. This session explains how mount
points work, how to use the 'mount' and 'umount'
commands to control them and how to build or
modify the /etc/fstab file to mount filesystems
in the correct order at boot time.
prereq: Familiarity with filename and directory
syntax in Linux or UNIX.
