9:00 a.m. SFS and some new advancements
(Reducing the Cost of Computing with SFS)
John Hall, Safe Software
Abstract
You can reduce the administration time and cost of VM/ESA
while providing increased functionality to your users by
taking advantage of the VM/ESA Shared File System (SFS).
SFS allows you to improve DASD utilization, reduce the
time and effort spent by system administrators, and enable
users and applications to more efficiently manage infor-
mation. John wll discuss why you should be using SFS,
issues you will encounter during an SFS migration, admin-
istration concerns, and how Safe Software can eliminate
migration and administration issues.

10:15 a.m. Introduction to CMS Application Multitasking
Christine Casey, IBM-Endicott
Abstract
This presentation helps you catch up on the Application
Multitasking technology that was introduced in VM/ESA
several years ago. We describe the multitasking structure
and constructs, functional capabilities, the process model,
server structures and API. This presentation provides an
overview to help you get started writing your own MT
applications
11:15 a.m. Testing OS/390 Parallel Sysplex Under VM/ESA
C. L. Morse, IBM Washington Systems Center
Abstract
VM's unique capabilities have always made it a very cost
effective and flexible platform for testing operating system
environments.
In the past, testing of the OS/390 Parallel Sysplex environ-
ment has not been possible. Now, with VM/ESA Version 2
Release 3, customers can test their Parallel Sysplex environ-
ment under VM, without the need for a Coupling Facility,
Coupling Links or a Sysplex Timer, making activities such as
disaster recovery testing easier and cheaper than ever. Year
2000 testing of a Parallel Sysplex is now possible with
VM/ESA's new TOD clock synchronization.
This session will describe the benefits of doing Parallel
Sysplex testing under VM, provide an overview of the new
support and show examples of how to get started testing
under VM/ESA.

3:00 p.m. NetRexx: The Easy Way to Learn Java
Christine Casey, IBM-Endicott
Abstract
How can Rexx programmers become immediately productive in a
Java environment? Use the Next Rexx programming language,
which is a blend of Rexx and Java!
Learn how Net Rexx fits into the Java infrastructure on
VM/ESA and how to code your applications in this new language
that will enable them to turn on any platform where there is
a Java Virtual Machine. Also included is some brief intro-
ductory material on Java and an update on the project for the
VM/ESA platform.
