Preliminary Agenda - MVMRUG October 24, 1997

 8:00 a.m. Registration
A continental breakfast will be provided.

 8:30 a.m. MVMRUG Business Meeting

9:00 a.m. Java and NetRexx for OpenEdition VM/ESA
(Write and serve Java applications on VM without becoming a C Programmer)
           Karen Kazda, IBM Endicott

           Abstract

Java is a new object oriented programming language developed
by Sun MicroSystems whose run time implementation permits object
code portability across heterogeneous platforms and provides
other facilities that aid in developing and distributing network
           centric applications.

NetRexx is an even newer language which blends traditional Rexx
syntax and constructs with the Java object model to produce a
truly general purpose language for scripting and application
programming in which the virtues of its predecessors (Rexx
simplicity and safety, Java function and portability) are fully
           combined.

After giving an overview of Java and NetRexx, this talk describes
an ongoing project to port the Java environment to OpenEdition
VM/ESA. and examines the potential utility and value of enabling
Java application development on and for VM/ESA.

10:15 a.m. Break

10:30 a.m. Integrating OV and the WWW
(Let your web browser users access the features and function of OV/VM)
           Chris Bolinger, Sterling Software

           Abstract

Its 3270 interface is causing long-time OfficeVision customers
to consider alternatives that provide graphical interfaces but
are more costly to implement and maintain. VM:Webserver for
OfficeVision provides a Web-based GUI interface to OfficeVision
that simplifies interaction with OfficeVision and also extends the
capabilities of the product with such enhancements as support for
E-mail attachments. This session will showcase VM:Webserver for
OfficeVision and explain how it can extend the life of OfficeVision
at your site. Even if you are not an OfficeVision customer, come
see the power of Web technology and how it can be applied to any
           application.

11:30 a.m. VM/ESA New Release
(What's in store for the next release of VM/ESA?)
           C. L. Morse, IBM Washington Systems Center

           Abstract

Well, its been almost a year since IBM announced VM/ESA Version 2
Release 2 so it must be about time for a new release. Chuck Morse
of IBM's Washington Systems Center will describe the enhancements
planned for the next release of VM/ESA, including Java, NetRexx,
           Parallel Sysplex testing and more.

12:30 p.m. Lunch

 1:30 p.m. FREE - FOR - ALL

 2:15 p.m. Web-enabling Mainframe Applications
(Web enable legacy VM applications easily without recoding them)
           Chris Bolinger, Sterling Software

           Abstract

Your organization probably has dozens or even hundreds of VM and
other mainframe applications with one or more of the following
           characteristics:

           * the client and server communicate exclusively through full-screen
data streams; there is no linemode interface
           * the client uses resources that are unique to each mainframe userid.
           * the application's security scheme requires that the client be a
             mainframe userid.
           * both the server and the client run on the same mainframe userid.

These applications are proven and even business-critical, but they
also have 3270 interfaces that your users dislike. One way of
improving the interfaces is to web-enable the applications through
Common Gateway Interface (CGI) scripts that run on a VM web server,
but standard CGI scripts cannot do the job because they cannot
communicate through a user's mainframe userid or drive a full-screen
(3270) session on that userid. This session explains how to use
Sterling Software's VM:Webserver Gateway to write powerful CGI scripts
that can web-enable all VM, VSE, and MVS applications.

 3:15 p.m. Break

3:30 p.m. VM Support for the Network Station
(Find out how VM can be an ideal host for the new skinny client network
           station devices)
           C. L. Morse, IBM Washington Systems Center

           Abstract

The IBM Network Station provides a new way to take advantage of
leading edge application technologies. This inexpensive
network computer retains the simplicity and cost effectiveness of
nonprogrammable workstations by using a PowerPC microprocessor
           to connect to a server.

Once connected to the server, the network computer functions
much the same as a personal computer that is attached to a local
area network (LAN). You have access to applications that are
stored on any authorized server or host.

This session will give you look at what the IBM Network Station is,
where it can be of value, and how VM/ESA can be a central source for
the Network station applications and configuration management.

 4:30 p.m. Door Prizes/Closing/Q & A/Socializing
